Why Customizing Your Cover Letter Is Critical

Ever wonder what the big deal is about cover letters? Continue reading to hear Lynda Zugec's reasons for customizingand submitting a stellar cover letter along with your resume.

Job seekers should always customize their cover letters to the particular role/position and organization. The most disappointing cover letters are those that have very little relevance to the position the applicant is applying for.

Cover letters should demonstrate a familiarity with the requirements of the position, and indicate that some background research has been done on the organization. A cover letter addressing local sales capabilities in the Midwestern U.S., for example, does little to help an organization looking to market in South America.

When tailoring resumes and cover letters to specific types of positions, job seekers with varied experiences would do well to focus on the adaptive skills they have obtained and the transferable learnings they garnered from their previous roles and experiences. Adaptive skills and transferable learnings are those which are necessary across a variety of positions. Because your adaptive skills are less position specific, highlight those qualifications to make customizing your cover letter and resume much easier.
